CV & Resume are the most heard words of a student while applying for a job. Many people might have the answer to the question – what is Resume, especially in the initial days of study.

CV & Resume are often used for the similar purpose but a Resume is slightly different than a CV. What is Resume actually, let’s find it out.

What is Resume?

A Resume is the summary of a job seeker’s work experiences & qualifications that are aligned for a particular position to apply. This is a formal document where the work experiences of a candidate along with the name of the organizations served, in the post with duration & major task responsibilities are listed.

The purpose is to highlight the experience portion rather than other elements. Particular mid-level jobs require a resume from candidates as a set of relevant skills & experiences are to be analyzed & judged & valued for a high level position where major or minor areas of education matters less, a resume is needed in this situation.

Elements of a Resume

A Resume has to have the following elements:

Contact Details

As it is a formal document that contains the body of work & skills of a candidate, it has to start with the name, mailing address, contact numbers with email ID supported by a colored & recent passport size picture attached.

Objective Aligned with the Post

The next thing comes in the two lines of objective that will carry the qualification & desire to seek for a particular pot based on the experiences & skills.

Series of Work Experiences

Under a heading of work experiences, there should be the work experiences listed. It is better to start writing from the most recent experience. The following things must be included-

  • Tenure of Each Work
  • Major Responsibilities

Details of Educational Background

After the work experience, there should be a table of educational background. Again, this description should start from the most recent degree / certificate achieved.

Types of Resume

A resume can be prepared in three ways:-

Chronological Resume

It is the presentation of the facts & the elements maintaining a chronology. The most recent events should be listed first.

Functional Resume

In this resume, there is no sequence maintained. Putting facts depends upon the writer or the intention of the job seekers.

  • It lets to highlight the fact intended by the applicant irrespective of date.

When to Use a Resume?

A resume is used:

  • To apply for a mid or higher level position where more than educational background, experiences matter.
  • To create a personal profile to attach in the social media platforms.
  • To highlight the varied experiences of a person.
  • To distinguish a person’s body of work than other aspects.
  • To store a person’s credentials for any instant use in future.

So, a resume is basically the list of work experience followed by educational background with skills where the focus mainly lies on the experience section. So now, the answer to the question that sometimes keeps buzzing a student – what is resume will no longer be blurred.
